How DSC helped Maersk Logistics achieve supply chain performance for their customer, Kohl’s

The goal: higher inventory accuracy and better customer service. The achievement: 0 claims, awesome accuracy and happy customers. Impressive, yes. Surprising? Not really, when DSC Logistics is your partner. Just ask Maersk Logistics.

Prior to partnering with DSC, Maersk Logistics utilized another 3PL in the Chicago area to service their customer, Kohl’s, and experienced high numbers of claims in inventory shrinkage and low levels of customer service. Not surprisingly, Maersk went looking for a new 3PL and saw in DSC a partner that was process driven with a powerful warehouse system to track inventory and impressive customer care services in place.

The products were Reebok, Nike and Rockport shoes, shipped from Asia to one of DSC’s Logistics Centers in the Midwest. From that center, DSC sent the product to Kohl’s seven distribution centers in the Central region.

Inbound, this was labor intensive freight. A container with three or four PO #s, each PO # containing shoes of various styles, sizes and colors, would arrive floor loaded. Well-trained and efficient DSC employees sorted and segregated the cases of shoes by style, size, color and PO #. Then, they palletized the product for efficient storage. As Kohl’s requested shoes for shipment, they would be case picked by color, size and PO # and sent out floor stacked.

DSC’s Warehouse Management System (WMS) handled with ease the multiple layers of complexity in the process. DSC worked closely with Kohl’s to understand exactly what was needed and why it was so important. Our IT team then adapted the WMS to reflect the extra level of detail (PO#) and developed systems for invoices and day-to-day operation. Our established systems and processes, customized to track, report and move the product through the Logistics Center according to Kohl’s needs, resulted in no inventory shrinkage and zero claims. We provided the high level of customer service Kohl’s needed, dealing with the almost daily changes in customer service requirements resulting from Kohl’s rapid growth.
