Leadership, collaboration and flexibility become ingredients in a recipe for success
When International Multifoods Corporation (IMC) acquired Pillsbury dry baking products from General Mills, they had to get a manufacturing plant up and running. And, negotiate a new labor contract. And, create a distribution center within the plant to handle both deployment to other warehouses and shipments direct to customers. Plus, they had to do it all with no experience or infrastructure in the production and distribution of retail products. Talk about multi-tasking.
The timetable for the upgrade of the plant kept changing. Indeed, the whole project kept changing—timelines, players, expectations, space availability, inventory levels, business categories, you name it.
Multifoods needed the right 3PL to make up for the lack of infrastructure and expertise, and they chose DSC Logistics.
DSC collaborated with IMC to merge two distribution centers into one facility to handle both deployment from the plant to other distribution centers and regional distribution from the plant directly to customers. We adapted our powerful Warehouse Management System (WMS) for receiving directly from the attached plant.
DSC and IMC worked together to establish inventory control processes to ensure accuracy and provide immediate visibility of the finished goods inventory, without adding costs.
DSC provided IMC with labor flexibility and leverage with their own employee base by managing all human resource issues, including having the workforce ready to go even with a continually changing start-up date.
DSC trained employees to be ready for anything. DSC’s employees learned both the old ERP and the new SAP system, even though they only had to ship for one week on the old system before the conversion.
Yes, DSC did much more than talk. DSC’s start-up team and consistent processes and systems established an environment that prepared for success, and DSC’s team at the facility executed superbly, allowing IMC to focus on their core competencies: manufacturing and marketing.
IMC was totally reliant on DSC to perform as promised. And, we did. It was multi-tasking at its best.
